Political Parties Hit with Big Fines El Universal
Eight parties were fined US$9.2 million on Tuesday for irregularities during last year´s presidential campaign.
The Federal Electoral Institute (IFE) approved the penalties during a meeting that ended after midnight, ruling that all parties committed violations including inadequate reporting of more than 30 percent of money spent on advertising.
"We are facing a situation that affects the transparency of our party system," said IFE president Luis Carlos Ugalde, "and I say ... it could affect the health of our democracy."
The IFE found that parties spent nearly 75 percent of their budgets on radio and TV spots, up from 50 percent in the previous presidential election.
The Institutional Revolutionary Party was hit with the biggest fine - US$3.4 million. The National Action Party must pay US$1.5 million, while the Democratic Revolution Party (PRD) was penalized US$1.3 million.
The rest of the fines went to smaller parties.
Some US$325 million, most of it from public campaign financing, was spent on the country´s closest presidential election in recent history. |
