Death Threat Posted on YouTube El Universa
Baja California state authorities said Friday they have requested a federal investigation into a death threat against their state prosecutor posted on a popular video-sharing web site.
The 54-second slideshow posted May 7 on YouTube.com displays photos of state prosecutor Antonio Martínez followed by messages threatening to kill him. One reads: "There is no price for what you have done; you know you will have to pay for this."
The messages were signed by "CAF," but it was not clear to what that refers. Anyone can post a message on Youtube.com and many use fake names.
The video appeared a week after the Tijuana weekly "Zeta" received a CD with recordings in which a former Tijuana police commander accuses state prosecutor Antonio Martínez of protecting the Sinaloa drug cartel, said the prosecutor´s spokesman Ernesto Álvarez.
Álvarez denied Martínez has any ties to drug trafficking.
It was not known if there was a link between the video and the recordings sent to "Zeta," an investigative newspaper that follows the drug trade, but Álvarez said his office had requested the federal Attorney General´s Office investigate both.
The video also shows old photos of Benjamín and Ramón Arellano Félix, the feared brothers who ran the Tijuana cartel, a rival of the Sinaloa gang. Benjamín is in jail and Ramón was killed in a gunfight in Mazatlán in 2002. Both brothers were on the FBI´s Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list.
It was unclear why they appeared in the slideshow with the prosecutor.
Álvarez said the state prosecutor had no plans to take extra precautions, although he said officials take every threat seriously. |
