Court Authorizes Telmex to Take Part in ´Triple Play´ El Universal
| The stock has gained 60 percent in the past year, compared with a 41 percent rise in the Bolsa benchmark stock index. | Teléfonos de México SA, the nation´s biggest telephone company, won permission from a federal court to sell packages of cable, Internet and phone service, reversing an earlier ruling.
Mexico´s 13th District Federal Court overturned the injunction preventing the packaging of services, the company said in a statement sent by email Thursday.
The federal government must now come up with rules to regulate the service, known as "triple play."
The country decreed last October that companies could bundle services. The injunction was put in place after a rival went to court to prevent the decree from taking effect, Telmex said.
The company will seek to attract customers with the multiple services to make up for slowing demand for fixed-line phone services.
"The regulation is very important for the industry and consumers because it will allow a bigger number of players, increasing the supply of services and reducing prices," HSBC Holdings Plc equity analyst Raúl Ochoa said in a phone interview. The Mexico City-based analyst doesn´t own the shares.
Telmex´s shares rose 45 centavos, or 2.4 percent, to 19.51 pesos at the end of Mexico City trading.
