Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton leads two prospective Republican presidential nominees in the United States, according to a poll by the Marist College Institute for Public Opinion released by WNBC. 48 per cent of respondents would vote for the New York senator in 2008, while 42 per cent would support Arizona senator John McCain.

Rodham Clinton also holds a five-point advantage over former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani. In other contests, former North Carolina senator John Edwards leads McCain by 10 points and Giuliani by six points. Illinois senator Barack Obama trails McCain by seven points, and Giuliani by two points.

On May 11, Obama proposed slashing government subsidies to private insurance companies, saying, "We don’t do that because we are not setting the agenda in Washington—insurance companies and drug companies are. That’s what people want to turn the page on. We want a system that’s fair and sensible to everyone."

In American elections, candidates require 270 votes in the Electoral College to win the White House. In November 2004, Republican George W. Bush earned a second term after securing 286 electoral votes from 31 states. Democratic nominee John Kerry received 252 electoral votes from 19 states and the District of Columbia.

Bush is ineligible for a third term in office. The next presidential election is scheduled for November 2008.
