On many nights it's not uncommon to see hundreds of underage El Paso teens crossing into Juarez on their way to the nightclubs to drink. However, as of tonight, Juarez police say anyone under 18 found out after 10 p.m. will be arrested.
You have to be 18 years of age to legally drink in Juarez, but police say that hasn't stopped teens as young as 13 or 14 from going to clubs.
The easy access to alcohol in Mexico has been a problem for years, but now the Mexican government is trying to stop it.
Juarez and El Paso police say they're working together to enforce the 10 o'clock curfew in hopes of cutting down on criminal activity. Recent statistics show most of the crimes in the central area of Juarez are committed by juveniles.
Nevertheless, some teens don't think the curfew is going to do much.
Juarez authorities only gave teens a one day notice that the curfew begins tonight. They then believe many teens will be caught off guard if they get picked up by police tonight. |
