Mexican Teachers Again Occupy Downtown Oaxaca Xinhua
Thousands of teachers on Monday occupied the center of the southern Mexican city of Oaxaca again, demanding higher pay and the release of seven people who led a protest last year asking the local governor to step down.
The protesters have set up squatter camps downtown and vowed to remain until their demands are met.
On the same day, state governor Ulises Ruiz told a press conference that his administration would spare no effort in seeking a dialogue with the protesters before considering the use of force.
Ruiz said he had asked Mexico's Interior Ministry to broker negotiations and expected progress in the talks so that the camps can be dismantled as soon as possible.
He said things have changed since 2006 as the central government has agreed to allocate some 500 million pesos (465 million U.S. dollars ) to the state.
Protesters occupied Oaxaca City, capital of the state of the same name, from May to October last year as the original teachers' strike for better pay developed into a protest demanding the resignation of Governor Ulises Ruiz, who made a bloody attempt to evict striking teachers in June. |
