Mexican Miners Strike to Demand Better Safety Conditions Associated Press go to original
Mexico City - Workers at three mines owned by Grupo Mexico, including the key Cananea copper mine in northern Sonora state, went on strike Monday to demand better safety conditions, Mexico's National Mining and Metal Workers Union said.
Miners walked out at Cananea, Mexico's largest copper mine, as well as at Grupo Mexico SAB's zinc mine in the central state of Zacatecas and at a silver mine in southern Guerrero state, the union said in a statement.
Safety at Mexican mines has come under increased scrutiny after 63 miners were killed last year in an underground explosion in a northern mine owned by a Grupo Mexico unit.
Earlier Monday, union official Carlos Pavon said the union is demanding that the company sit down to negotiate collective contracts and address union safety and other concerns. He said 3,000 workers were expected to strike.
A Grupo Mexico official said the company expects labor authorities to declare the strikes illegal. He said only a minority of the 1,300 workers at Cananea voted over the weekend in favor of a strike. |
