Americans Give Bad Reviews to U.S. Congress Angus Reid Global Monitor go to original
Adults in the United States remain mostly dissatisfied with their federal lawmakers, according to two recent public opinion polls. In a survey by Rasmussen Reports, 58 per cent of respondents rate the way the U.S. Congress is doing its job as fair or poor, down 20 points since mid-June.
In a study by CBS News, 60 per cent of respondents disapprove of Congress’ performance, up eight points since May.
American voters renewed the House of Representatives and one-third of the Senate in November 2006. On Jan. 4, the Democratic Party took control of the lower house for the first time since 1994, with 233 lawmakers. A victory for the Democratic candidates for the Senate in Montana and Virginia also gave the party a majority in the upper house. Democratic California congresswoman Nancy Pelosi became the first female speaker of the House.
Yesterday, Pelosi urged more Republican Party lawmakers to support the call for a different policy in Iraq, saying, "Now the question is whether they will join in a bipartisan way in voting to change course in Iraq and to bring our troops home? For those in Congress who have yet to speak out, the question is: how long until you respect the wishes of the American people to end this war?"
