Locals Promote Gay Tourism in Puerto Vallarta

On Sunday, July 22nd a group of gay, lesbian and straight business owners gathered at Encuentros Pizza Bar & Lounge to find out about an exciting new business alliance that promotes gay and gay-friendly tourism in Puerto Vallarta.
Empresarios Gays de Puerto Vallarta A.C., (E.G.P.V.) was formed to effectively compete with Cabo San Lucas, Cancun, Puerto Rico and other worldwide tourist destinations for the lucrative LGBT community's travel dollar.
The association's goal is to promote Puerto Vallarta as a premier destination for the gay community by spreading the word that Puerto Vallarta is definitely a gay friendly town.
One of the things that highly concerns E.G.P.V. members is the fact that the new passport laws that went in to effect in 2007 have caused a decrease in all types of tourism in Puerto Vallarta. As a result, many businesses in the Banderas Bay area are reporting that this year's sales are lower than they were in 2006.
Another pressing concern for E.G.P.V. members is that Puerto Vallarta is being "out promoted" by other popular gay-friendly vacation destinations such as Puerto Rico, Los Cabos, Curacao and Cancún, to name a few.
E.G.P.V. is striving to increase gay tourism in the 2007/2008 high season, as well as continue to bring in tourism from the gay market all year long. To achieve this goal, members are planning new events that will attract more first-time visitors while encouraging repeat visitors to return more often.
The plan is to build a membership base of both straight and gay business owners who can help the association develop a strong working relationship with other associations and corporate sponsors such as hotel and restaurant associations, major tour operators, air and cruise lines, as well as Mexican owned or headquartered businesses.
Since Puerto Vallarta is close to many major markets, and is easily accessible via land, air and sea, the association is also developing a website to promote Puerto Vallarta as the resort destination of choice to LGBT communities in the US, Canada, México and around the world.
According to a 2006 survey, the US and Canadian markets spend approximately $65 billion a year on travel, yet only 9% have ever been to Puerto Vallarta (highest rate in México.) The gay community takes an average of five 4-day vacation per year, and in addition to exploring new destinations they like to return to their favorite resort year after year.
Gay travelers from the US and Canada want a destination that has a safe, gay-friendly reputation - and with more that a dozen gay or gay-friendly hotels, plenty of gay beaches, and over 20 gay bars and nightclubs, all within walking distance of each other - Puerto Vallarta's Zona Romantica fits the bill.
Here in Mexico, Guadalajara's gay community offers a prime target market because driving to Puerto Vallarta is quick and easy. México City and Monterrey are also lucrative markets since many domestic airlines offer and affordable flights to PV.
Nowadays competition for the gay travel dollar is fierce. There are a number of well-established gay associations around the world that not only have local and state tourism boards supporting them, but also have corporate sponsors, websites and aggressive advertising campaigns that promote their destinations as gay friendly.
But Puerto Vallarta has many unique selling points that you just won't find anywhere else. Along with its beautiful beaches and "Old Mexico" atmosphere, Puerto Vallarta offers travelers a diverse cultural environment and every modern convenience, including high-speed internet, outstanding restaurants and nightclubs, excellent shopping, and a wealth of outdoor activities - not to mention a vibrant gay scene.
Top it all off with the city's extremely gay-friendly disposition and you've got a winner! The people of Puerto Vallarta are extremely tolerant of different cultures and lifestyles, so as long as visitors are respectful, courteous and adaptable, tourists, international residents and Mexican locals can all coexist in harmony.

They will also be working with the local and state tourism board to ensure that Vallarta is being promoted on an equal basis with our competitors, and soliciting corporate sponsors to help create events throughout the year that will attract the gay community.

Empresarios Crean Organización Para Promover el Turismo Lesbico-Gay en Vallarta

El pasado Domingo 22 de Julio tuvo lugar en el restaurant bar Encuentros de esta ciudad, la primera reunión de Empresarios Gays de Puerto Vallarta, A.C a favor de promover Puerto Vallarta como destino turistico durante todo el año ya que en lo que va del 2007 las cifras de visitantes nacionales e internacionales a este hermoso Puerto han bajado radicalmente en relación a años anteriores.
Estámos concientes de que la nueva política de Relaciones Exteriores emitida por Estados Unidos requiriendo pasaportes a los Norteamericanos para poder viajar a nuestro país ha afectado de alguna manera nuestra afluencia turística actual, ya que muchos visitantes tuvieron que esperar hasta tres meses para poder adquirír sus pasaportes.
Por otro lado, la fuerte promoción que se le está haciendo a otros destinos turísticos nacionales como La Riviera Maya y Los Cabos e internacionales como San Diego, Miami, Curacao, La India, Puerto Rico y Costa Rica entre otros han propiciado que nuestro turismo se vea afectado.
Cabe recalcar que la invitación a participar en nuestra organización está totalmente abierta a todos aquellos socios, propietarios y empresarios que no sean homosexuales y lesbianas ya que reconocemos y enaltecemos el valor de la diversidad y libertad sexual dentro de nuestra comunidad y economía locales.
El propósito a seguír es promover Puerto Vallarta como destino de calidad ante la comunidad gay, además de también promoverlo durante todo el año y no solamente durante temporada alta procurando sacar el mayor provecho de las diversas actividades de las que disponemos en nuestra zona.
También se pretende crear una serie de nuevos eventos para atraer mas turismo gay a Vallarta, buscando asi, atraer en repetidas ocasiones al turista que ya nos haya visitado anteriormente.
Actualmente se está trabajando en lograr una base de miembros que incluya todo tipo de negocios y que a su vez desarollemos con ello una fuerte alianza de trabajo con agencias de turismo locales, estatales e internacionales así como también, desarollar una fuerte relación de trabajo con otras asociaciones y patrocinadores corporativos dentro de las cuáles podemos encontrar; asociaciones de hoteles y restaurantes, agencias de operaciones turísticas, líneas aéreas y cruceros, además del desarollo de un sitio web que promueva Puerto Vallarta entre la comunidad gay a niveles internacionales, con mayor enfoque en Estados Unidos, Canada y México por razones obvias.
Si no nos organizamos enfatizaron los empresarios corremos el riesgo de terminar como Acapulco que alrededor de hace 20 años fue el destino preferido de la comunidad gay y que fue perdiendo su lugar preferencial ante Puerto Vallarta en los últimos años.
Los Cabos y Cancún son en la actualidad fuertes competidores nuestros ya que están trabajando arduamente en la promoción y difusion de sus destinos turísticos obteniendo hasta ahorita excelentes resultados que nos han puesto en riesgo desde que tienen sitios web enfocados a la comunidad gay, excelente difusion publicitaria en general, patrocinadores corporativos, además de organismos de turísmo locales y estatales apoyándolos constantemente.
Debemos de hacer hincapié de que en Puerto Vallarta nos distinguimos por el hecho de que contámos con un ambiente cultural diversificado, tenemos una gran belleza geográfica, y que afortunadamente aún poseemos un sabor de pueblo mágico y tradicionalmente Mexicano junto con el lujo y las comodidades que dan los resorts, restaurants, centros nocturnos y demas actividades de primer mundo, haciendo de Puerto Vallarta una gran ciudad costeña con escencia única en su género.
Por otro lado nuestra bella ciudad es completamente Gay Friendly! Habiendo hecho mención de nuestras grandes ventajas ante otros lugares turísticos no nos cabe mas que unificar nuestros esfuerzos y trabajar con constancia para lograr alcanzar nuestras metas a un corto plazo.
