(Reuters) | A small bomb went off at a top department store in the troubled Mexican city of Oaxaca on Wednesday but no one was injured, Mexican radio reported.
The explosion at the entrance of a Sears store in the southern city followed a series of blasts last month at fuel pipelines in central Mexico by a left-wing rebel group, which unsettled energy markets.
Oaxaca's attorney general, Evencio Nicolas Martinez, told W Radio station a homemade bomb damaged the entrance door to the store, located inside one of the city's top malls.
"I think local groups could be behind it," he said.
A second explosive device was found at a U.S.-owned bank in the city but it did not go off.
Oaxaca, a popular stop for European and U.S. tourists, was hit last year by a violent conflict between state police and protesters calling for Gov. Ulises Ruiz to resign.
The protests died down in December after federal riot police arrested several protest leaders but trouble flared up again in July when activists burned buses and fought police during an indigenous cultural festival.
Mexican magnate Carlos Slim, one of the world's richest men, owns the Sears stores in Mexico. |
