That's nearly a year after his narrow victory over leftist Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador divided the nation and sparked massive protests.
The poll by Consulta Mitofsky shows Calderon with an approval rate of 66%. That's higher than the 63% approval rate that Calderon's predecessor, Vicente Fox, had at the same time in his term.
Fox's historic victory in 2000 ended 71 years of rule by the Institutional Revolutionary Party and gave him strong approval ratings at the start of his term. In comparison, Calderon had to overcome widespread accusations of electoral fraud and vote tampering, and heal a nation torn apart by his narrow presidential victory. That win was declared by the Federal Electoral Tribunal more than two months after the contested election.
However, Mexicans still believe Calderon has work to do. The poll found that the economy and crime were by far their biggest concerns.
The poll questioned 1,000 voters between July 27th and 31st, and had a margin of error of 3%age points. |
