Thousands Evacuate Mexico City Building

Mexico City - More than 10,000 people were evacuated from Latin America's tallest building on Thursday after a bomb squad found a device in the parking garage that possibly could contain explosives.
An unidentified person called one of the offices of the 740-foot Torre Mayor, located on Mexico City's main Reforma avenue, to warn that a bomb had been placed inside a car on one of the building's 13 parking levels, said an official from the capital's Public Security Department, who was not authorized to be quoted by name.
Explosives experts found a device inside a car consisting of three metal tubes tied together, the official said. They also found a cell phone, but it was unclear if the phone was attached to the tubes, he said.
Specialists from Mexico's attorney general's office were analyzing the device Thursday afternoon to determine if it contained explosives, the official said.
A total of 10,800 people were evacuated from the 55-floor building, inaugurated in 2003. |
