Ujena Bikini Jam 5K Saturday Morning Run
email this pageprint this pageemail usBob Cohen - PVNN

The 200+ runners are ready to start the 5K run.

Overall female first place finisher, 26 year old Leticia Joya.

Visitors from Boston, Scott and Christine Anderson won the male and female Over 40 competitions.

Police and Fire Department officials get all the fun!

Even Bob Cohen got his moment posing with one of Ujena's models got this photo by Sue Fornoff.
All week long local drivers came to complete stops at different places, streets and times for no apparent reason. As the car horns blasted from behind, the drivers realized when they inched forward that there was a Ujena Bikini Jam photo shoot and it was surely a legitimate reason to stop and take an extended look at the 200+ beauties that spent this week in Puerto Vallarta in the 2007 Ujena competition.

Saturday morning the police and fire departments forced drivers to stop and move into the lateral lanes on the main street out of town beginning at the Sports Stadium across from the Sheraton, up to the Holiday Inn and back because the 2007 Ujena Bikini Jam 5K Run/Walk was held at 9:00AM. Over 200 runners gathered at the starting line as Mayor Javier Bravo was present for the event. Some ran for the fun of running, some ran to better their best times and some ran for one of the ten $100 USD prizes awarded in ten different categories.

Most races run in Puerto Vallarta has our normal "beat" sportswriters covering the runs, but this one was quite different as the streets were flooded by photographers that had cameras they needed help carrying. The whole event is not just about the prettiest model that looks best in a bikini, but also was a competition for photographers of which there were reported close to 80 that registered.

The ten categories that were awarded were:
1 - First male finisher
2 - First female finisher
3 - First 40 and Over male finisher
4 - First 40 and Over female finisher
5 - First local Puerto Vallarta male finisher
6 - First local Puerto Vallarta female finisher
7 - First competing model
8 - First photographer
9 - First Under 20 male finisher
10 - First Under 20 female finisher

The first 100 runners to complete the 5K (3.1 mile) run received Olympic style medallions and the first 200 runners also received souvenir T shirts. They ran out of T shirts so we know that last year's number of 187 competitors was beat.

As usual in a race like this, results aren't made available immediately, nor are the winning times, but I did have the opportunity to get a few photos of the winners of some divisions. Leticia Joya, a 26 year old won the overall first place for the females and Elizabeth Gonzalez won the Under 20 division. In a very cute story, a couple that were on vacation from the Boston area and staying across the street at the Sheraton were last minute entrants; not knowing in advance about the race. They turned out to be trained and active runners, and Scott and Christine Anderson both won the Over 40 divisions and the $200 helped pay for their entertainment while visiting Puerto Vallarta. More results will be reported as they come in.

After the competitors cooled down there was a Bikini Acrobatics Exhibition presented by the Ujena traveling staff. The models all had a full day still ahead, let alone the Vallarta nightlife they have been enjoying, so all left and showered for still more photo shoots. For any younger girls that aspire to be models, please come to the event next year and see all the intensive work involved. It was a great start however for a Saturday.

Now that is an impressive group of models. The one man in the photo is Puerto Vallarta Mayor Javier Bravo.

The belief that businesses that run together, operate better is tested as the team of Pizza Papa Don all competed in the competition. Don was out of town but his wife Laura Famosa is a well seasoned runner and finished second in the Over 40 divison.

Ujena CEO Bob Anderson with Laurie Dickson, a fitness model for Ujena of British Columbia in Vallarta for her second year.

And now the girls are getting ready for the Fitness Acrobatics Exhibition.
