Blazes Rip Through Northern Mexico Destroying More Than 60 homes Associated Press go to original
Mexico City - Two blazes roared through northern Mexico, destroying more than 60 homes just across the border from the deadly California wildfires before dying out, Mexican officials said Wednesday.
Commander Gabriel Gomez Ruiz, director of civil protection for the state of Baja California, said the fires started independently of the San Diego County blazes that have destroyed nearly 1,300 homes but were fueled by the same winds.
Flames ripped through the cities of Ensenada and Tecate in Baja California, knocking billboards and cables to the ground, but were under control by Tuesday afternoon, Gomez Ruiz said. About 200 people were evacuated in Ensenada when the fire started Tuesday at midday - but no one was killed or injured, he added.
"It's now very sunny in the whole state, and the winds are calm," Gomez Ruiz said.
Rafael Carrillo, commander and assistant director of firefighters in Tijuana, said he had sent 35 of his men to the city of Escondido in San Diego County to work alongside U.S. firefighters. The Tijuana firefighters will remain in California for about a week, he said.
On Sunday, about 30 firefighters each from Tijuana and Tecate headed north when the wildfires started in San Diego County, said Capt. Marco Antonio Garambullo, Tecate's Fire Department director. Those same workers returned home on Monday as flames kicked up south of the border.
School has been suspended since Monday in Tijuana due to the smoke from the California fires. |
