Mexican President at Center of Controversy Prensa Latina go to original
| Senator Manlio Fabio Beltrones | Mexico City - Former Mexican President Vicente Fox, who faces a parliamentary investigation for alleged acts of corruption became the center of controversy again on Monday.
The origin of the problem was public allegations made by Fox against Senator Manlio Fabio Beltrones, who is coordinator of the Revolutionary Institutional Party (PRI), linking him to drug traffic.
According to Fox, Beltrones is under investigation by the US drug enforcement agency (DEA) specifically for his alleged relations with Mexican drug cartels.
The allegation, rejected by Beltrones, has triggered remarks against Fox by members of different parties in Congress, including German Martinez, a presidential hopeful of Fox's governing Accion Nacional Party.
Senator Carlos Navarrete, on behalf of members of the Democratic Revolution Party (PRD) in Congress, announced that political groups will close ranks in the upper chamber to support Beltrones.
It is a widespread demand that Fox should present evidence of such a serious allegation, as he is held responsible of saying nothing about an investigation carried out by a foreign agency during his term in power.
As a sign of the difficult situation faced by Fox, PRD coordinator in the Chamber of Deputies, Javier Gonzalez Garza, said he will be tried as a criminal and described as insulting the wealth boasted by him and his family. |
