Nineteen People Killed in Single Day in Mexico - Summary DPA go to original
Mexico City - Nineteen people were killed Monday in Mexico, in attacks carried out in several states, according to media reports from Tuesday. The daily El Universal reported that 1,981 people have suffered violent deaths in Mexico so far this year.
In the resort of Acapulco, in the state of Guerrero, a total of eight people were killed. Three of them were beheaded and the bodies charred.
Three employees of a newspaper were shot and killed on Monday in the Mexican state of Oaxaca, according to police. The three distributors of the daily El Imparcial were in their company truck 220 kilometres south of the city of Oaxaca when they were attacked by a group of armed men.
The director of El Imparcial had been receiving death threats and staff of the newspaper had been harassed by diverse groups for the past several weeks, although no details over the threats have been released.
Mexico is considered one of the most dangerous countries in the world for journalists. Since 2000, some 30 journalists have been killed in the North American country, and several others remain missing.
Professionals specializing in local crimes are often threatened by organized gangs and forced not to report on their activities.
In many towns, state organs are thought to have been infiltrated by criminals, and most of the cases around the killings are never solved. |
