The soldiers received sentences of 18 months to two years in prison, the Defense Department said in a news release this week.
The soldiers were part of a group of 13 soldiers questioned in connection with the sexual assault last year on 14 women who worked in the red-light district of the town of Castanos in northern Mexico.
The six soldiers were guarding ballots for the July 2006 election in the city of Monclova but abandoned their posts and joined seven off-duty soldiers at the bar where the rapes were committed, according to Coahuila state authorities.
Earlier this month, four of the six soldiers sentenced by the military court also received prison sentences of three to 41 years by a civilian court. The court found them guilty of raping and beating the women, including one who was five months pregnant and later lost the baby. |
