Mexican Drug Trafficker May Be Extradited to US BYLINE
| Sandra Avila, aka Reina del Pacifico | Mexico City - The boss of an international drug trafficking network, Sandra Avila, may be extradited to the United States and sentenced to life, according to the General Prosecutor's Office.
Avila, also known as Reina del Pacifico (Queen of the Pacific), has been accused of introducing and distributing tons of cocaine into the United States, the world's major drug market, the Mexican institution said at a press conference.
The US Court of Justice issued a warrant on Avila in 2004 and asked Mexican authorities to arrest the drug trafficker to try her on US territory, where she might be sentenced to life, the General Prosecutor's Office said.
Avila was arrested in a restaurant in the Mexican capital on September 28, along with Juan Diego Espinoza, who was her main liaisons between the Juarez and Sinaloa cartels, and that of Colombia's Valle del Norte.
Her criminal career began in 1999, when she joined a gang of drug traffickers who US judicial authorities have identified as Leyner Valencia (a.k.a. El Pira๑a) and his brothers, Victor (El Doctor) and Dairo (El Ramache or El Menor). |
