Mexican Officials Investigate 'Virtual Kidnapping' Calls to Lawmakers

Mexico City - The Mexican Attorney General's Office is investigating fake kidnapping calls to at least 11 federal legislators.

Among those receiving the calls was a congresswoman who fainted after being told her son had been abducted.

Congressional officials say none of yesterday's calls turned out to be genuine. The calls prompted the speaker of Mexico's lower House to suspend the day's session.

All calls were made to telephones belonging to members of the governing National Action Party, or PAN. However, investigators believe the pattern had more to do with lawmakers' phone numbers than their political affiliations.

Each of the lawmakers' cell phones begin with the same six numbers and end with two numbers arranged in a sequential series. All of the calls originated from two numbers.
