Mexico Dispatches More Troops to Reinforce Crackdown on Drug Gangs

Mexico City - The Mexican government has dispatched about 3,000 soldiers, marines and police to reinforce a crackdown on drug gangs in a northern state, the country's security ministry said on Thursday in a statement.
The reinforcements bring to more than 5,000 the number of federal police and troops in Tamaulipas state, a hot spot in Mexican President Felipe Calderon's war against smugglers, according to the statement.
Calderon has sent 25,000 federal police and soldiers to combat drug gangs along the border with the United States and in other areas around Mexico over the past year.
Troops and federal police deployed around Mexico generally monitor highways entering towns and cities, performing random vehicle searches in search of drugs and weapons.
Turf wars between drug gangs smuggling South American cocaine and other drugs have killed around 2,350 people in Mexico this year. |
