Mexican Farmers Protest NAFTA Prensa Latina go to original
Mexico City - Mexican farmers' organizations stopped work on Tuesday facing the implementation of the North America Free Trade Agreement in less than two weeks.
Among actions they plan for this week are a human barrier on the US frontier and peaceful protests against the neoliberal measure, explained Victor Suarez, leader of the National Council of Farmers Organizations.
He warned that other measures could be taken to prevent six million growers of corn, beans and milk from going bankrupt as a result of the total opening of the sector by NAFTA.
Max Correa from the Farmers Union warned there will be social destabilization by 2008 due to the lack of policies against unequal competition from eliminating duties in January on basic products coming from Canada and the United States. |
