Mexican President Urged to Reflect Prensa Latina go to original
| Felipe Calderon waves to the public when celebrating his victory, in Mexico City, July 6, 2006. He won the country's closest-ever presidential election with a razor-thin lead. (Xinhua/AFP) | Mexico City - Víctor Valencia, who chairs the Mexican legislative committee investigating alleged embezzlement by ex President Vicente Fox, urged present President Felipe Calderon to consider bringing the former president to trial.
In a recent speech Calderon said he will not allow summary trials during his mandate, so Valencia urged him to act carefully because to judge by his remarks, the Executive would be allowing officials not to proceed against the predecessor.
Calderon is generating an atmosphere of skepticism and lack of reliability, and is trying to exonerate someone about whom the committee has not completed its investigation or rendered a report, he said.
Valencia urged Calderon to be careful of what he says, to stay out of the issue and respect the job of the legislative power.
"The tone of his presidential speech was not in line with his campaign promise to have a government with clean hands, opposed to impunity and illegality," noted Valencia. |
