U.S., Mexico Join Forces Against Stolen Car Rings

Phoenix, AZ - The Department of Public Safety and their counterparts in Mexico are teaming up to put the brakes on car theft rings.

Thieves take about 50,000 Arizona vehicles a year. About 20,000 of them are never recovered.

About six months ago, Arizona and Mexican officials formed an eight-man stolen-vehicles unit led by Jesus Zamora Orozco, the police commander of the San Luis Rio Colorado police department in Mexico.

The new team represents growing cross-border cooperation to stop criminal car-theft rings that have plagued border states for years and are expanding into other crimes.

In October, the team broke up a Guadalajara-based ring that stole Arizona and California cars, replaced the VINs and made fake ownership papers to conceal the true owners.

The ring made the cars look like legitimate purchases.
