Mexico Court Says Cananea Copper Strike Can Go On Mica Rosenberg - Reuters go to original
Mexico City - A Mexican court said on Friday that a four-month strike at Grupo Mexico's Cananea copper mine can continue, a lawyer for the company said.
More than 1,000 workers walked off the job at the Cananea mine in Sonora state, near the U.S. border, on July 30, halting its output of copper, silver and gold.
Labor authorities later declared the strike illegal, but the miners' union filed an injunction in the courts to keep the strike going.
"The ruling upholds the injunction in the union's favor," Christina Rocha, a lawyer for Grupo Mexico, told Reuters.
Cananea produced about 160,000 tonnes of copper last year, when it was hit by a shorter strike.
Grupo Mexico (GMEXICOB.MX) says the current stoppage is costing $2.8 million a day in lost sales.
Rocha said the labor conflict now will return to the labor mediation board, which would likely reconvene early next year.
