24th Canto Del Sol Pro-Am January 22-26 Bob Cohen - PVNN
| Last year's winners, brothers Sergio and Roberto Martinez, will not be allowed to compete as a team this year as both are now considered pros. New champions are guaranteed to be crowned. | | The 24th Annual Canto Del Sol Pro-Am Tennis Tournament will be played beginning January 22nd and will culminate on January 26th, according to Tennis Director Martin Parra. The very popular event played in high tourist season, matches up a local pro in a doubles tournament with an amateur who pays the fee for the team to compete. It becomes quite competitive because the pro that wins and the other professional finalist take home the cash purse and the amateur gets the trophy.
There will also be singles competition in the Pro-Am in the "A", "B", "C" and Kid's divisions. The "B" and "C" divisions have supplied the best competition in recent tournaments. The singles will be played on the clay courts and the finals will be held on the hard courts the final day. Cost to enter the singles competition is $200 pesos.
The whole Pro-Am event will be played on the hard court surface and will be limited to 24 teams. Currently there are 20 registered teams, so call the Canto Del Sol Tennis Club ASAP at (322) 226-0123 ext. 4187 if you want to try to enter. Entries officially close on January 19th, but the Pro-Am is expected to reach its maximum of 24 well before the deadline date.
Local pros that will be competing are all of the Vallarta area's best players. The top players, according to recent tournaments, are Luis Carlos Rodriguez, Pedro Martinez, Danny Niño, Samuel Sanchez, Sergio Martinez, Norberto Aguirre, Polo Torres and even Martin Parra will lace up his tennis shoes to compete.
The playing partners of the pros are generally "A" or "B" players; anything lower would severely hamper the chances of the team to win. In recent years, the competition has been fierce as early as the quarterfinals. Parra expects this year to be one of the most competitive tournaments in recent years.
Local businesses supporting the event will have either the owners or a representative playing for the sponsoring business. Some sponsors are Pipi's Restaurant, CMQ Hospital, Alaska Airlines, Tropicasa Real Estate, Electronic Integral and Restaurant La Mission among many others.
For more information or to register for the tournament, stop by the Canto Del Sol Tennis Club in the Puerto Vallarta Hotel zone or call 226-0123 and ask the hotel operator for ext. 4187 or to connect you with the tennis courts or "canchas de tenis." Come join the already large group of competitors; there is a spot for every level of play. |
