Cancun, Mexico - A shootout between heavily armed gunmen and police in downtown Cancun killed one person and wounded four, officials said.

Gunfire broke out about 10 miles (16 kilometers) from Cancun's world renowned tourist zone when police responded to a call for help by a man who said he was being followed by armed men, state prosecutor Luis Canche said.

Canche said the assailants took shelter at a house and began shooting and detonating grenades. The man killed was holding a live grenade, he said.

"This is clearly related to organized crime," Canche said.

He said the man who called police for help and three others, including two women, were gravely wounded. Canche did not say if there were any arrests.

Colombian smugglers often drop off shipments of cocaine on Mexico's Yucatan peninsula - where Cancun is located - and Mexican cartels then move the drugs north to the United States
