Mexico Rebel Group Says to Warn of Future Attacks

We would like to tell our people that whenever we take action anywhere in the country, we will warn the government a few minutes ahead of time in order to prevent any human losses.

Mexico City - A Mexican rebel group that bombed energy pipelines last year and disrupted production at dozens of industrial plants said on Tuesday it will issue warnings of any future attacks to avoid killing civilians.

The Marxist-inspired Popular Revolutionary Army, or EPR, began bombing natural gas and oil ducts in mid-2007 to demand the release of two leftist activists it says were seized by the government in May in the volatile southern city of Oaxaca.

"We would like to tell our people that whenever we take action anywhere in the country, we will warn the government a few minutes ahead of time in order to prevent any human losses," the EPR said in a statement released on a Web site that publishes statements from Latin American guerrilla groups.

"If there were to be any losses, it would be the government's responsibility," it added.

The EPR's attacks last year did not hurt or kill anyone.

The government has denied it holds the activists, one of whom is the brother of EPR leader Tiburcio Sanchez Cruz.

In Tuesday's statement, the EPR called again for amnesty for all political prisoners in Mexico.
