Mexico to Keep Discount on Highway Tolls Through 2008 Adriana Arai & Valerie Rota - Bloomberg go to original
| Mexico will keep holiday-season discounts on federal highway tolls through all of 2008. | Mexico will keep holiday-season discounts on federal highway tolls through all of 2008, helping soothe the burden on consumers who are facing a new fuels tax and higher food prices.
The discounts, of as much as 10 percent, cover 4,324 kilometers (2,687 miles) of highways operated by the federal government, the Communications and Transportations Ministry said today. Initially the reductions were to be temporary.
``The goal is to offer a discount on the most expensive tolls in Mexico and stop increases,'' the ministry said.
Mexican central bankers warned inflation may quicken to as much as 4.5 percent this year, above the 3 percent target, because of a new gasoline tax and rising food prices. Inflation was at or above 4 percent in 12 of the last 15 months.
Policy makers increased the benchmark interest rate twice last year, to 7.5 percent from 7 percent, to keep prices in check.
The toll reductions apply to 11 roads President Felipe Calderon plans to sell to private investors by the end of this term in 2012, according to the ministry statement.
Calderon announced Dec. 19 that the toll discounts would last only through the holiday season and that the federal government would refrain from raising the regular rates after the discounts expired.
