25,000 Mexican Miners Walk Off the Job Associated Press go to original
Mexico City - About 25,000 miners walked off the job for eight hours Wednesday to protest the presence of police at Mexico's largest copper mine, which has been embroiled in labor conflicts for months.
The workers, members of Mexico's Mining and Metal Workers Union, represent less than 10 percent of the 279,000 workers employed in the industry.
Union spokesman Carlos Pavon said the union received a unanimous response in favor of the walkout, which took place during Wednesday's first shift.
Juan Rebolledo, spokesman for Cananea mine owner Grupo Mexico SAB, said the company wasn't affected by the action.
Grupo Mexico resumed control of Cananea with police support last Friday, after labor authorities declared a five-month strike there illegal. Workers walked off the job at Cananea on July 30 to protest health and safety conditions.
On Saturday, a court granted the union a provisional injunction against the labor board's decision. That ruling keeps the company from firing workers who continue to strike, but allows those who want to work to do so. |
