| Mexican police arrested 10 men after a series of shootouts left three dead and 10 officers and soldiers injured in Rio Bravo. | | Mexican police arrested 10 men after a series of shootouts left three dead and 10 officers and soldiers injured in Rio Bravo, where federal police built up a presence as part of the president's crackdown on drug cartels.
The men earlier led police on a chase through the city after refusing to stop at about noon, when authorities saw the suspects were armed, according to an e-mail statement from the Ministry of Public Safety. The men stopped at least four times and shot at the officers.
They finally stopped at a house, where the men were arrested and police found weapons, including a grenade launcher. They also found a large safe, which they have yet to open.
Rio Bravo, across the border from Donna, Texas, is in Tamaulipas state, where the Gulf Cartel is based. Gunmen killed Juan Antonio Guajardo Anzaldua, a former senator and mayor of Rio Bravo, in December after he said the cartels had backed candidates in the election. The next day, Attorney General Eduardo Medina Mora said the government had proof the cartels had influenced elections in Tamaulipas and the central state of Michoacan.
