(Reuters/Stringer) | | Mexico City - Mexican troops have seized 103 airplanes and three helicopters in hangars in Culiacan, capital of the northern Mexico state of Sinaloa, the nation's Defense Ministry said in a Sunday statement.
The nation's Attorney General's Office (PGR) also took part in the operation, which came about after the owners of the aircraft were unable to demonstrate legal ownership. The PGR suspects the aircraft were used to launder money.
The state is home to the Sinaloa Cartel, one of Mexico's largest organized crime rings, which is run by Joaquin Guzman, a convicted drug trafficker and fugitive better known by his nickname El Chapo (Shorty).
The Mexican government has been fighting drug trafficking and organized crime in joint military-police operations across the nation, with most of the action concentrated in northern states.
According to local media, organized crime-related violence has killed nearly 400 people across in Mexico. |
