April Events You Won't Want to Miss! Pamela Thompson - PVNN
| For those of you who are still enjoying the high season here in Puerto | | For those of you who are still enjoying the remainder of the high season here in Puerto Vallarta, there are plenty of entertaining and educational events planned for this April that you won't want to miss!
On Wednesday, April 2nd, the Wise Wo-Men of Puerto Vallarta are pleased to announce the fabulous Vivian Hemphill will be speaking on "The End of Poverty," so be sure to join us at the International Friendship Clubhouse at 10 am.
Vivian says: "In the desire to end poverty, we must understand both sides of the coin: Poverty and Philanthropy. We must know the characteristics and mechanisms of poverty. Is poverty monetary or is it also emotional, spiritual and cultural? What is the role of charity and philanthropy in ending poverty? Why do people give? Is it really to make the world a better place or is giving instead about something less grand, like seeing your name in print, responding to peer pressure or simply feeling good about yourself? Is charitable giving a high-minded form of consumption? These two interconnected socioeconomic behaviors, philanthropy and poverty will be presented and explored further to arrive at possible resolutions for personal altruism."
Vivian is the founder of "Manos Unidades por la Mujer." This program gives local women a forum to experiment with various craft projects while acquiring business skills, and earning an income while working at home.
The ladies of Manos Unidas por la Mujer get crafty with a wide variety of materials and most of their creations are made from recycled goods, newspapers, plastic grocery bags and can tabs. Items that the women create will be available for purchase.
We ask that you bring donations of fabric remnants, swatches used for clothing, upholstery or drapes. As well, these women make marvelous large shopping bags from plastic bags, so clean out your cupboards and bring your plastic bags.
