Easter Week Beach Brigade to Prevent HIV

Last week, while Puerto Vallarta was host to thousands of visitors for Semana Santa, or Easter Week, the local non-profit Vallarta Enfrenta el SIDA, A.C. (Vallarta Confronts AIDS, in English) was busy spreading the word about HIV.
Beginning on Thursday, a group of Vallarta Enfrenta el SIDA (VES) employees and volunteers visited with individuals, couples, and families on Los Muertos Beach, distributing condoms and safer-sex materials, informational flyers, and talking about HIV and AIDS.
The effort was supported by the local HIV clinic, known as CAPSITS (for it’s acronym in Spanish,) as well as by COMUSIDA and the Jalisco State Advisory Board on HIV/AIDS, known as COESIDA.
COMUSIDA, the Municipal agency for HIV, and the CAPASITS clinic provided staff to help with the outreach project. COESIDA provided condoms, as well as Frisbees and baseball caps with HIV messages printed on them. VES is an active member of the COESIDA advisory board.
Approximately 15 volunteers, dressed in white VES t-shirts and plenty of sunscreen distributed 4,500 informational flyers, 3,000 free condoms, and over 2,000 promotional items, working the entire length of Los Muertos Beach on both Thursday March 20 and Friday March 21.
On Saturday night, 11 VES volunteers hit the Vallarta club scene. Beginning at the SKY Club, where party promoters Will Gorges and Gilles Belanger presented the "Fashionista Party," and proceeding to Angels (formerly Sr. Frog’s), Club Paco Paco, and Stereo Bar, the VES team distributed 2,000 informational flyers, 2,000 condoms, and other promotional items.
Paco Arjona, Executive Director and organizer of the weekend events, commented that "Semana Santa offers us a unique opportunity to reach thousands of people with our message of sexual health, HIV protection, the importance of getting tested for HIV infection, and where to go for information, treatment, and a range of social services that are available at no cost. This week, I believe we saved lives with this project." He added that he is very grateful for the support of the agencies that assisted in the effort.

La semana pasada, mientras Puerto Vallarta recibía a miles de visitantes por Semana Santa, la organización no lucrativa de la localidad Vallarta Enfrenta el SIDA, A.C., se dedicaba a informar a la población acerca del VIH.
Empezando el jueves, un grupo de empleados y voluntarios de Vallarta Enfrenta el SIDA, A.C. (VES) platicaron con individuos, parejas y familias en la playa de Los Muertos, distribuyendo condones, materiales para sexo seguro y folletos informativos acerca de VIH. El esfuerzo fue apoyado por la clínica local, conocida como CAPASITS (Centro Ambulatorio Para la prevención y Atención del SIDA e Infecciones de Transmisión Sexual), por COMUSIDA y COESIDA.
COMUSIDA, la agencia municipal para VIH, y el CAPASITS, proveyeron el personal calificado para llevar proyectos de alcance a la comunidad sobre VIH/SIDA. COESIDA proveyó condones, así también, artículos promociónales con mensajes sobre sexo seguro impreso en ellos. VES es miembro de vocalía de COESIDA Jalisco.
Aproximadamente 15 voluntarios vestidos con sus playeras de VES y mucho bloqueador solar, distribuyeron 4,500 folletos informativos, 3000 condones gratuitos, mas de 2,000 artículos promociónales, cubriendo por completo la playa de Los Muertos el pasado jueves 20 de marzo y viernes 21 de marzo.
La noche del sábado, 11 voluntarios de VES cubrieron la vida nocturna en los discos de Vallarta. Empezando en el Club SKY, donde los promotores de fiestas Will Gorges y Gilles Belanger presentaron la "Fashonista Party," después cubrieron el Angel´s (antes Sr. Frogs), Club Paco Paco y el bar STEREO. El equipo de VES distribuyó 2,000 folletos informativos, 2,000 condones, entre otros artículos promociónales.
Paco Arjona, Director y organizador de este evento de fin de semana comento: "Semana Santa nos ofrece una oportunidad única para llegar a miles de personas con nuestro mensaje de salud sexual, protección de VIH, la importancia de hacerse la prueba del VIH y a donde acudir por información y ayuda, además de un gran número de servicios en este ramo completamente gratuitos y de fácil acceso. Creo que esta semana salvamos vidas con este proyecto" Agregó estar agradecido con el apoyo de las agencias de gobierno que unieron esfuerzos.
