Supporters to Press for Jailed Canadian's Release The Canadian Press go to original
| Canadian Brenda Martin has been in a Mexican jail for two years. | | Toronto — The organizer of a rally which will be held on Parliament Hill Saturday says he hopes the event will put more pressure on the Conservative government to help Brenda Martin, a Canadian who has been held in a Mexican jail for more than two years without trial.
Paul Macklin, who's with the Save Brenda Fund which has organized the rally, told CTV's Canada AM Friday in Toronto that Martin supporters are hoping to get her case high on the agenda of Parliament, which resumes Monday.
The rally is set for 2 p.m. EDT on Saturday.
He says he's expecting hundreds of people will attend the demonstration including people from Calgary, London, Ont. and Windsor, Ont.
Mr. Macklin says clearly the government needs a relationship with Mexican President Felipe Calderon on this file to make sure Canada and Mexico can come up with a satisfactory resolution.
Mr. Martin, who was arrested in February 2006, denies any involvement in an Internet-based fraud scheme masterminded by her former boss that bilked 15,000 investors out of nearly $60-million (U.S.).
A Foreign Affairs Department report, obtained by The Canadian Press, shows Canadian officials have regularly visited and telephoned Martin since her imprisonment, contrary to claims by critics. |
