Canada Blasts Mexico's Jailing of Canadian Woman Without Trial Agence France-Presse go to original
| | We're all troubled by the fact that a Canadian has been in a Mexican prison now for two years without trial. The process is unacceptably slow, and I think it troubles all of us. - Stephen Harper | | | | Ottawa - Canada's Prime Minister Stephen Harper on Wednesday blasted the snail's pace of Mexico's judiciary in deciding the fate of a Canadian woman jailed for two years without trial for alleged fraud.
"We're all troubled by the fact that a Canadian has been in a Mexican prison now for two years without trial. The process is unacceptably slow, and I think it troubles all of us," Harper told reporters.
The prime minister said Canadian officials up to "the very highest levels" pressed their Mexican counterparts for Canadian Brenda Martin's swift release, while her friends and family warned of her deepening despair, fearing she may try to commit suicide.
Martin, 51, was arrested in 2006 for her alleged involvement in an Internet investment scam that landed her former boss Alyn Waage in a US prison. Waage was said to have bilked more than 60 million dollars (Canadian, US) from 15,000 victims in 57 countries.
Martin has denied all culpability in the scheme, saying she was only Waage's cook.
Harper said he has asked for a "full review" of her case.
However, he also acknowledged the Mexican judiciary's independence and noted the case is "a very complicated one legally." |
