Australia Condemns Whaling Battle
email this pageprint this pageemail usReuters

Australia calls for anti-whaling activists and Japanese whalers to show restraint.

The call comes after an activist said he was shot during a clash with Japanese whalers in Antarctic waters. Japan's fisheries agency said coastguard officials had only thrown "flash grenades," which are used for crowd control and are not regarded as weapons.

Reuters' Michelle Carlile-Alkhouri reports.

New Row in Whaling Dispute

The captain of anti-whaling vessel the Sea Shepherd says he was shot in the chest during a clash with Japanese whalers but the Japanese fisheries agency denies this.

The incident is the latest clash between the environmentalists and Japanese whalers in the Southern Ocean.

Japan abandoned commercial whaling in 1986 when it agreed to an international moratorium but began its research programme the following year which sees around a thousand whales being killed annually.

Reuters' Michelle Carlile-Alkhouri reports.
