The Navy League Council of Puerto Vallarta was happy to arrange yet another community relations project recently, when the CGC Midgett came into port here.

Having completed the painting of the Los Mangos library during January and February, thanks to earlier visits by U.S. ships, the Navy League chose the Casa Hogar for attention by crew-members from the Midgett, who volunteered to donate their time and muscle to the task of maintenance work there.

Around thirty crew-members turned out to do a thorough clean-up job at this privately supported orphanage. As well as cleaning around the orphanage and an adjacent lot, the crew brought with them coloring books, crayons, books and a soccer ball.

When the work was done, there was time for the sailors to play an impromptu game of soccer with some of the children. The finishing touch was a gift of stickers bearing the ship's name, for children and staff alike.

The Navy League believes in offering visiting sailors not only the opportunity to contribute their skills to deserving causes in Puerto Vallarta, but also to have a relaxing good time once the work is done. So, as has become the custom, the work party from the Midgett were entertained to a very happy lunch party to complete their day of getting to know Puerto Vallarta.

It may occur to some, that the name "Midgett" is somewhat unusual for a 378-foot High Endurance Cutter. A ship that has seen action in many parts of the world, including a deployment alongside the aircraft carrier Constellation in the Persian Gulf in 1999. So you should know that the name Midgett ranks high in the annals of the U.S. Coast Guard.

The current ship's name honors the late Chief Warrant Officer John Allen Midgett Jr. He was born in 1876 and served for nearly forty years in the U.S. Life Saving Service. He was awarded the nation's highest award for saving a life (The Gold Lifesaving Medal) for leading a rescue crew that saved 36 men from the torpedoed British ship Mirlo in 1918 in spite of high seas and flames from the doomed ship's cargo of oil and gasoline.

What is just as remarkable is the fact that seven members of the Midgett have received the same high award and more than 150 members of the Midgett family have made the Coast Guard a career.

The Puerto Vallarta Navy League is pleased and honored to salute the Midgett family - and the ship that bears their name.

The Puerto Vallarta Navy League council has it's regular monthly meetings at 11 am on the first Tuesday of the month at the Marriott Casa Magna Resort in Marina Vallarta. The next meeting is on May 6, 2008. Visitors are welcome. For more information, visit VallartaNavyLeague.org
