'Pregnant' Man to Show Oprah Ultrasound Scan UK Telegraph go to original
| Thomas Beatie's article as it appeared in The Advocate, Mr Beatie and his partner on a magazine cover, the couple celebrate in Honolulu | | The pregnant man who used to be a woman is expected to show US chat show host Oprah Winfrey the images from his ultrasound scan, proving that his pregnancy is not a hoax.
Thomas Beatie, 34, of Oregon, claimed he was pregnant in an article in a gay magazine last month, but has since remained silent about his extraordinary tale.
Many observers, including Mr Beatie's neighbours, thought the story was a hoax after he said he would not give any interviews until April Fools Day.
There was also speculation that the story could be connected to a new television series which plays pranks on the media.
But the interview with Mr Beatie will be broadcast on "Oprah" on Thursday, according to the programme's website.
The site adds: "The couple reveals the details of their pasts, their relationships and their incredible pregnancy. Then, watch as our cameras capture the ultrasound and get an inside look at the couple's plans for the nursery."
According to an excerpt of the interview, Mr Beatie told Winfrey: "I'm a person and I have the right to have my own biological child."
The announcement came as it emerged Mr Beatie, who was pictured topless with a swollen belly last month, had previously posed for a gay magazine as a woman.
Mr Beatie posed as a muscular woman before his sex change with his bikini-clad girlfriend Nancy in 2000. A second picture showed the couple in a wedding-style photograph taken in Honolulu in 2002.
Mr Beatie was born female and called Tracy Lagondino, before having gender reassignment surgery. He is now legally male and married to Nancy.
He was able to get pregnant because he kept his female organs when he switched genders and conceived through donor sperm.
Last month, Mr Beatie wrote in The Advocate: "How does it feel to be a pregnant man? Incredible. Despite the fact that my belly is growing with a new life inside me, I am stable and confident being the man that I am."
"Sterilisation is not a requirement for sex reassignment, so I decided to have chest reconstruction and testosterone therapy but kept my reproductive rights. Wanting to have a biological child is neither a male nor female desire but a human desire." |
