Five Years of Responsible Reforestation

While San Isidro Labrador (May 15th) is now usually considered as only the patron saint of the teachers in the urban areas of México, the countryside still considers San Isidro as the protector of agriculture and planting.
The preparation of the land and seeds before the seasonal rains is a long tradition and provided an appropriate day for the Grupo Ecológico de Puerto Vallarta, A.C. to celebrate a "Walk on the River" to talk to students and interested residents of Puerto Vallarta about it's 5 year-old reforestation program along the Río Pitillal.
The Río Pitillal is one of the three principal rivers in the area of Puerto Vallarta. Currently, there are 150 trees that range from 1 to 5 years of age which require water and care during their first years. Ceiba and Primavera have been some of the more successful tropical trees which have developed. Some are now 5 meters in height.
About 40 guests, both young and adults, accompanied us along the 2 km stretch of river, which runs through the communities of Pitillal and the hotel zone just north of Puerto Vallarta. The area is one of the few remaining natural green areas within the urban zone of Puerto Vallarta. The long-term plan is to create a public park along both sides of the Río Pitillal for walking, running and bicycling.

On the day of the walk, there were discussions on how to collect seeds of endemic trees to begin a home nursery, how to transplant the saplings after two years, when they are 1 meter in height and as thick as your finger, and how to care for the tree for another two years in the field.
This program, begun in the summer of 2003, is called Reforestaciòn con Responsabilidad. The objective is to have as high a percentage of survival as possible through periodic maintenance, watering and care.
Identification of trees by seeds, leaves, flower, fruit and form was discussed by the guides from the Grupo Ecológico as well as treatment of common infestations. A photo of the group with one of the large, existing Higuera trees, wild fig tree, was taken to commemorate the event.
The Grupo Ecológico will again be transplanting new trees and enjoying the trees already planted over the past several years at the beginning of the rains in July. One day, the hope is to have a riverside park that extends from the ocean to the mountains that can be enjoyed by residents and tourists in this popular tourist destination.

5 años de Reforestación con Responsabilidad en una Área Verde Urbana

Mientras la celebración de San Isidro Labrador (el 15 de Mayo) ahora esta considerada por la mayorìa de la gente ùnicamente como el patròn de los maestros en las àreas urbanas de Mèxico, en el campo San Isidro sigue siendo el protector de los agricultores y la siembra.
La preparación de las tierras y la siembra para aprovechar de las lluvias es una larga tradición y proporcionò un dìa apropiado para el Grupo Ecològico de Puerto Vallarta, A.C. de celebrar una "Caminata en el Rìo" para compartir sus experiencias con estudiantes y residentes de Puerto Vallarta sobre su programa de reforestaciòn en las orillas del Rìo Pitillal a los largo de los ùltimos 5 años.
El Rìo Pitillal es uno de los tres rios principales en el àrea de Puerto Vallarta. Actualmente, existen como 150 àrboles con 1 a 5 años que requieren agua y mantenimiento en los primeros años después de la transplantaciòn. Ceiba y Primavera han sido algunos de los àrboles endèmicos màs exitosos. Algunos ejemplos ya alcanzan 5 metros de altura.
Alrededor de 40 invitados, jóvenes y adultos, nos acompañaron sobre un extensión de cómo 2 kms. del rìo que pasa por El Pitillal y la zona hotelera al norte del centro de la ciudad. Esta àrea es uno de los ùltimos àreas naturales todavía intacta dentro del àrea urbano de Puerto Vallarta. El plan, a largo plazo, es para crear un parque pùblico en ambos lados del Rìo Pitillal para caminar, correr y usar bicicleta.
La mayorìa de los estudiantes que nos acompañaron tienen varios años de cursos de ecologìa proporcionado por Protecciòn Civil. Las instalaciones de Protecciòn Civil se encuentran en las orillas del rìo.
El dìa de la caminata, hubo plàtica de cómo recoger semilla de los àrboles locales para empezar un vivero casero, como transplantar los pequeños àrboles después de dos años, cuando miden 1 metro de alto y tienen un espesor de tallo de cómo el dedo del mano y como cuidar el árbol en el campo por otros dos años.
El presente programa, empezado en el verano de 2003, se llama Reforestaciòn con Responsabilidad. El objetivo del programa es para tener un alto porcentaje de sobrevivencia de los àrboles sembrados a través de mantenimiento y riego de los àrboles pequeños.
La identificación de los àrboles por medio de sus semillas, hojas, flor, fruto y forma fue impartido por los guìas del Grupo Ecològico tambièn como tratamiento de plagas que se puede afectar los àrboles. Una foto del grupo en la defensa simbòlica de una de los grandes àrboles del campo, una Higuera, fue tomado para conmemorar el evento.
El Grupo Ecològico lanzarà otra siembra de àrboles con la llegada de las lluvias en Julio como en todos los años pasados. Un dìa, la esperanza es de tener un parque lineal desde el mar hasta las montañas para el esparcimiento de los residentes y visitantes a Vallarta, un destino turìstico siempre recordado por sus àreas naturales.
