President Felipe Calderón to Attend Formal Inauguration of National Olympiad 2008 in Monterrey Presidencia de la República go to original
| President Felipe Calderón will inaugurate the National Olympiad for the second time during his administration. | | Monterrey, Nuevo León - The 2008 Edition of the National Children’s and Youth Olympiad will be inaugurated by Mexican President Felipe Calderón this Tuesday in the city of Monterrey. This competition is regarded as the greatest sports competition in the country, attracting millions of Mexican children and young people every year.
President Felipe Calderón will inaugurate the National Olympiad for the second time during his administration; in 2007, it was held in the Luis Pirata Fuente stadium in the Port of Veracruz.
The president will be accompanied during the event by Public Education Secretary, Josefina Vázquez Mota; Governor of Nuevo León, Natividad González Parás; Director General of the National Commission of Physical Culture and Sports, Carlos Hermosillo Goytortúa; Director of the Mexican Youth Institute, Priscila Vera Hernández, as well as Director of the State Institute of Physical Culture and Sport, Melody Falcó Díaz, amng other distinguished personalities.
At 16:45, Arena Monterrey will provide the setting for the inaugural ceremony, which will include a show with approximately 100 dancers depicting the spirit of the National Olympiad. The giant puppet Luca, which made its first appearance at the Universal Forum of Cultures 2007 in the capital of Nuevo León, will take part in the lighting of the torch.
Archer Youseff Fraige will swear the sports oath on behalf of nearly 27,000 athletes while Rosa María Adam Tovar will do the same for the judges.
Nuevo León, one of the four venues for the 2008 edition, is the state that will host 22 of the 40 disciplines, followed by San Luis Potosí with nine, Tamaulipas with seven and Guanajuato with two.
Staging the Olympiad and the National Paraolympiad 2008 involves an investment of over $110 million pesos in the four host states. This year, approximately 27,000 sportspersons will participate, who qualified after winning the state and regional stages, a process that began in late 2007. |
