The annual event is by far the most popular tennis tournament each year for players and spectators and families as well. Puerto Vallarta is a tennis destination and with school out in Mexico, families come to spend their vacation on the courts, at the beach and visiting our city.
There is a professional tournament built into the structure with a total purse of $10,000 pesos and is a part of a nine tournament circuit in which the professional player that accumulates the most points in the total of all tournaments will win a brand new Mazda. The other eight tournaments are played in Guadalajara. The professional event will be played under the guidelines of the Tennis Association of Mexico and the will be run by the Tennis Association of Jalisco.
There is a very big amateur component included in the tournament that draws more participants than any other in Puerto Vallarta, with most players combining summer vacations with their families and the tennis tournament. There is always a huge contingent that comes from Guadalajara and a large group from Tepic, among other destinations in Mexico.
The divisions competing other than the professionals will be A, B, C, D, Beginners, C50 and D50 for the men and A, B, C and D for the women. There will also be doubles play in each division for both men and women.
Seven courts (3 hard and 4 clay) will be utilized and will be full from early in the morning and on many days play will run past midnight into the early morning. This has been the case in the past as rain has closed down the clay courts and match times have had to be adjusted to move all play inside. Two years ago I had a scheduled match at 7 pm, but due to late afternoon storms, I didn't get out on the court until 11 pm.
The cost for playing both singles and doubles is $320 pesos and $200 pesos for doubles only. Entries will be closed on August 1st and the draw presentation will be held at a cocktail party in the Salon Bugambilias at the Canto Del Sol at 6 pm on August 4th.
The Director of the tournament is Martin Parra, the Director of tennis at the Canto Del Resort and Tennis Club. The Arbitro General is Polo Torres and assistants are Polo Martinez and Leonardo Lopez.
For more information about the tournament, call the Canto Del Sol at (322) 226-1023, extension 4187. For information about tournament and accommodation packages, call the same number and inquire. We hope to see a crowd even bigger than last year, so come on out and enjoy the competition - and the fun. |
