During the ceremony, held at the National Talent Development and High Performance Center, the President asked Mexican athletes to fight for their objective and to concentrate on winning: “Think about Mexico, Mexicans, your parents, brothers and focus on the ideal you have set throughout your lives, go after victory."
Twenty-three days before the start of the Olympic Games, President Calderón Hinojosa said that government increasingly supports high-performance athletes, as borne out by the fact that over 130 million pesos were spent were spent on the Mexican Delegation's training, while scholarships for sportspeople belonging to the Program for Mexico's Integral Commitment to its Athletes (CIMA) increased by 80%.
On behalf of Mexican sportspeople, María del Rosario Espinoza, world Tae Kwon Do champion, expressed her pledge to competing with commitment, dignity and nationalism. She thanked Federal Government for its support, adding that the president has been one of the main promoters of increasing the effort invested in sports competitions.
The Olympic Delegation comprises 83 athletes from 22 federations, 40 of whom are women and 43 of whom are men, in addition to two athletes who have yet to be chosen for the beach volleyball team, who will classify over the next few days.
The event was attended by Felipe Muñoz Kapamas, President of the Mexican Olympic Committee, Carlos Padilla Becerra, Mission Chief of the Mexican Delegation in Beijing, Carlos Hermosillo Goytortúa, Director General of the National Commission of Physical Culture and Sports, and Josefina Vázquez Mota, Secretary of Public Education. |
