President Calderón Fulfills Promise to Indigenous Communities, Handing Over more than 200 Infrastructure Works

Actions involve electrification, drinking water and highways, in addition to supporting productive projects.
 
Temoaya, Mexico State - At the start of his working tour of Mexico State, President Felipe Calderón handed over 200 works as part of the Basic Infrastructure Program for Attending Indigenous Peoples, which includes electrification, safe drinking water, highways and financial support for regional productive projects.

From the Otomí Ceremonial Center, in the municipality of Temoaya, where he received ritual honors and the Staff of Office of the Supreme Chief, the President stated that without water, electricity or roads, it is impossible to live with a minimum of dignity, which he why he was meeting his government's commitment to the development of indigenous communities throughout the country.

These works include the modernization of the road from San Antonio Mextepec to Santa Ana Nichi, in the community of San Felipe del Progreso and projects for another ten highways in the region, such as the one linking Tres Puentes to San Miguel Xooltepec in the municipality of Donato Guerra.

As for electrification, explained the president, 22 new communities were electrified in 2007, while the goal for this year is to benefit an additional 20,000 inhabitants in over 141 communities in the Otomí-Mazahua zone.

The President declared that all these social actions are not carried out for party reasons or concerns but with the genuine aim of serving people to enable them to live better.

Later on, in the community of Santiago Tlaxomulco, in the state capital, President Calderón handed over economic assistance for the 70 and Over Program, for which basis assistance of $500 pesos a month is given to adults over the age of 70 living in communities with fewer than 10,000 inhabitants.
