"Several problems remain to be solved, but we are on the way to an understanding."
- President Felipe Calderón

Mexico City: - This week at the Los Pinos Official Residence, President Felipe Calderón witnessed the presentation of an Additional Agreement for Retirements and Pensions for Recently-Admitted Permanent Workers, whereby the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) will improve its service and ensure its financial viability.

During the meeting with representatives of the IMSS authorities and union, the president acknowledged the workers' efforts and cooperation, adding that this agreement is proof that challenges may be overcome when emphasis is placed on joint work and the nation’s interest.

The President explained that one of the main advantages of the agreement is that it will guarantee the institution's financial viability, since new workers, particularly doctors and nurses, will be able to be hired without damaging work liabilities.

Second, the Agreement fully respects the collective rights of the 380,000 current workers, while recently-hired workers' will have their pensions duly financed by their own contributions, in addition to those of the Mexican Social Security Institute and Federal Government.

Another benefit is that the IMSS will be able to offer more and better services, since it will open up approximately 20,000 new positions almost automatically, mainly to medical personnel, to meet the demand for attention of a growing number of members.

The agreement also created productivity bonuses that will reward workers' efficiency and directly influence the quality of service received by those affiliated to the Mexican Social Service Institute.

President Felipe Calderón declared that many problems at the IMSS have yet to be solved, but added that: “This is the road to a solution, the road to dialogue and understanding and placing national above partial interests.

During the event, the president was accompanied by Secretaries of Labor and Social Welfare, Javier Lozano Alarcón; Finance and Public Credit, Agustín Carstens Carstens; as well as IMSS director and Secretary General of the Union, Juan Molinar Horcasitas and Valdemar Gutiérrez Fragoso, respectively.
