Mexico's Mastretta MXT

There's quite a history of cars being built in Mexico by major manufacturers, but the introduction of the Mastretta MXT comes as something of a shock.

That's because it's the first car to have been both designed and produced in Mexico. It's an attractive, lightweight two-seater sports car with a supercharged version of Ford's two-litre Duratec engine producing 240bhp and driving the rear wheels through a five-speed manual gearbox.

"We needed to create a great car because Mexico has no tradition of sophisticated sports car manufacturing," says designer Daniel Mastretta. "It is most important that our customers are delighted by the new MXT. That's what we aimed to do from the first drawing of the car, but we also want to make our country proud of the MXT and to show the world what we can do."

The final prototype of the MXT will be on display at the British International Motor Show at London's ExCel from July 22 to August 3, and visitors will be able to place orders through Lifestyle Automotive, which has been appointed as European distributor. Right-hand drive production will start in January and the first UK cars should be available in May.
