Spain recovered from an early setback to overcome Mexico 2-1 and leave themselves in a strong position to progress from Group D.
Christopher Flores fired the Aztecas in front on three minutes, and adept defending from both sides thereafter meant that chances were few and far between. And when the rivals did manage to get a sight of goal, the reflexes of Spain's Roberto Valeiro and Miguel Estrada of Mexico denied the game its second goal.
That was until the latter was undone in the second period, when Amarelle magically worked himself some space before firing low into the bottom corner. Shortly after the second restart, Antonio edged Spain in front. There was still time for Estrada to produce an acrobatic save from a sumptuous overhead-kick from Amarelle, and Valeiro to keep out a Gustavo Rosales effort, but the final whistle sounded to Spanish celebrations.
