A Mexican woman was forced to fight off an escaped lion with a machete after the 430 pound wild cat attacked the donkey she and her 7-year-old niece were riding on.

Associated Press reports that 35-year-old Celsa Aleman said she had been travelling along a road in the city of Acapulco when the lion lunged at the legs of the donkey.

Fearing the lion would attack her young relative, Aleman summoned up admirable levels of courage, hacking at the big cat with a machete until it ran away. She and her niece both escaped unharmed.

In a statement, a government spokesman told the Associated Press that the lion had escaped from a private zoo owned by a former local congressman. It killed two dogs and ate a pig before it was caught, sedated and returned to captivity.

Aleman’s incident is the second this week in which a wild cat has come in dangerously close proximity to humans. In Idledale, Colorado, a mountain lion crept into a house and grabbed a pet dog from a bedroom as its owners slept close by.
