Mexico's Top Anti-Drug Prosecutor Quits E. Eduardo Castillo - Associated Press go to original
Mexico City – Mexico's top anti-drug prosecutor has resigned as part of a law enforcement shake-up amid a wave of shootouts and murders across the country, two officials in the Attorney General's Office said Thursday.
Noe Ramirez, assistant attorney general for organized crime, submitted his resignation at the request of the attorney general and with the authorization of President Felipe Calderón, the officials said. They refused to be quoted by name because the move had not yet been made public.
Ramirez has held the post since Calderón took office a year and a half ago. The president's office said it could not confirm Ramirez's resignation.
The officials in the Attorney General's Office said the move is part of a law enforcement shake-up by the Calderón administration, which has yet to achieve a drop in rampant drug violence despite a massive deployment of soldiers and federal police to fight organized crime.
Ramirez's successor is expected to be Marisela Morales, who previously headed up the agency's office on human trafficking, the officials said. |
