Mexico City – Mexico posted a $1.081 billion trade deficit in July, higher than expected, the national statistics agency said Friday.
Analysts polled by Reuters had forecast a deficit of $446 million.
Total exports rose 22.3 percent from a year earlier to $27.682 billion, with oil-related exports up 52.4 percent. Non-oil exports were up 15.9 percent.
Imports in July were $28.763 billion, up 23.3 percent over the same month in 2007. Of that, imports of intermediate goods were 20.8 percent higher and consumer goods imports were up 23.6 percent. Imports of capital goods rose 39.1 percent, the government said.
Mexico is the world's No. 6 producer of crude oil, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, and the No. 10 exporter.
Exports of oil, which has been at record high prices, generate around a third of Mexican government revenues.
