Mexico City, National Palace - President Felipe Calderón led the ceremony of the Shout of Independence this evening at the Central Balcony of the National Palace, where he recalled the speech given 198 years ago by Don Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla in Dolores, in the state of Guanajuato.
At 11 p.m., accompanied by his wife Margarita Zavala, the President waved the National Flag and rang the Dolores bell, the original patriotic symbol permanently housed in the National Palace, opposite Constitution Square.
Earlier, in the Reception Hall, the banner was honored and the National Anthem played when a military escort handed the Mexican Flag to President Felipe Calderón.

Mexico City - Tuesday morning, President Felipe Calderón led the traditional September 16 Military Parade, which this year commemorates the 198th Anniversary of the Start of Independence in Mexico.
He began by taking an open military vehicle to Mexico City's capital, where he reviewed the troops, flanked by Secretaries of National Defense, General Guillermo Galván Galván and the Navy, Admiral Mariano Francisco Saynez Mendoza.
Then, from the central balcony of the National Palace, he witnessed a parade with contingents of Special Forces, cadets from the Heroic Military College, the Heroic Naval College, the Military School of Nursing and conscripts from National Military Service.
The President observed a demonstration of parachuting and rappel given at Constitution Square, with members of the armed forces who climbed out of two helicopters, and remained there until the end of the parade.
During his speech, Commander of the Parade Column and Undersecretary of Sedena Francisco Armando Meza Castro declared that the military parade had been carried out with no accidents, with the intervention of a total of 14,507 members of the armed forces.
He added that the Army and Air Force participated with 44 flags, 10,958 elements, 180 vehicles, 63 airships and 139 horses.
The Mexican Navy participated with 8 flags, 3,999 elements, 54 vehicles, 12 boats and 18 airships. 150 charros or Mexican cowboys also took part in the Military Parade. |
